Nervous about having a colonic? Here's what to expect from your colonics procedure...

Don't be nervous! Having a colonic is really no big deal. Just relax and think about the favour you are doing your body and your health. The more relaxed you are the better your experience will be. And each time you come for a treatment you'll be more comfortable than the last time. If you’ve been abusing your health for years by eating a poor diet, are chronically constipated, etc.

it may be a little uncomfortable at first, but preparing yourself ahead of time will help minimize any discomfort.

For some people it is a huge relief knowing that years of toxic garbage is coming out of their system. Others experience an emotional release on the table and feel like a weight has been lifted from their heart as well as their colon! When I first started getting colonics not much happened because I was chronically constipated and had a very sluggish colon. It took a series of colonics procedures to start things moving and chipping away at the encrusted fecal matter. I was quite crampy at the beginning. You know the feeling you get when you think you’re going to have diarrhea and have to get to the restroom ASAP? That’s the feeling you may get on the table. The best thing to do is relax, breathe, and let the water gently do its work.

I would strongly advise eating lightly in the hours before your colonic and avoiding coffee and carbonated beverages as they will make you more gassy and acidic, which in turn will make you more crampy. I personally look forward to having regular colonics as I just feel so much healthier..and skinnier afterwards!

Unfortunately, one colonic probably won’t do too much unless you have a very healthy, happy colon. Typically a series of colonics is needed. Most people choose to do either a quarterly series of 6-8 colonics over the course of a few weeks (much like a seasonal cleaning). Remember, it takes time to chip away at all that mucoid plaque. Your colon didn't get to be in its current state in one day and it won't take one session to fix it. Others choose to come every couple of weeks or once a month.

The colonics procedure

We use the gravity method at The Oasis Centre for Colon Hydrotherapy. That is the method and colonics procedure that both myself and my daughter were taught in our trainings. I’ve personally had colonics using both the gravity method and the machine and I prefer our method. We find that our method gives the therapist more control during the treatment.

When you get to the centre you'll be greeted by myself (Lessley) or my daughter. We’ll show you the treatment room and adjacent washroom and answer any questions you may have. The treatment room is warm and comfortable. We also have relaxing music to put you more at ease. You’ll be given a large towel and advised to undress from the waist down and lie covered on the table on your left side. Your therapist will come in at this point and explain the procedure to you in more detail. A speculum will be warmed and lubricated and put in the rectum. Then two plastic tubes will be attached to the speculum so that fresh water can go in one tube and the waste will come out the other and flow directly into the septic system. Once the speculum is firmly in place we’ll start the water flowing gently into the colon. Then we do a series of ‘tie offs’ which means that we cut the flow of water leaving the colon and allow the water to sit in the colon for up to a minute depending on your comfort level. At anytime during the treatment you can let us know if you’re uncomfortable or just tell us to ‘release’ the tie off. After a few minutes you’ll be asked to lie on your back and we’ll continue with the treatment doing ‘tie offs’ and massaging the abdominal area. We understand that this is a rather personal and intimate thing to experience, so at any time if you’re uncomfortable please let us know. Our main priority is always the comfort and well-being of our clients.

The whole treatment takes approximately an hour. Once it’s over you’ll go to the washroom where you’ll sit on the toilet and empty your colon of any further water and waste that may still need to come out. You may feel a little tired or weak after the treatment. That’s normal as your body has just detoxified considerably. You may get a mild headache which is also a normal cleansing reaction. We recommend that you drink lots of water after your treatment and take some probiotics to help balance the good bacteria in your gut. If you don’t have any at home you can buy some at the health food store or natural section of your local grocery store. We highly recommend taking probiotics on a regular basis to maintain good intestinal health and to prevent the overgrowth of candida yeast in the body.
